DAY-4
TODAY MARKET IS CLOSE, SO THERE IS NO TECHNICAL UPDATE ON STOCKS.
NEWS UPDATE
The depository firm, National Securities Depository Ltd
(NSDL), is expected to launch its much-awaited 3000 crore initial public
offering (IPO) in March 2025. As reported by PTI, the 12-month deadline for the
DRHP expires in September 2025. State Bank of India (SBI) and HDFC Bank plan to
offload 5.72 crore equity shares in the NSDL IPO, which will be a complete
offer for sale (OFS). HDFC holds 8.95%, while SBI holds 5% in NSDL. These banks
are planning to do that to boost their balance sheets, which is expected to
bolster their respective quarterly results in the upcoming quarter. So, these
two stocks will be on the watch list of bulls during the NSDL IPO opening date.
HDFC Bank: A Smart Approach to Growth and Profitability
Introduction
HDFC Bank, India’s largest private lender, is shifting its strategy to focus on profitable and sustainable growth. After merging with HDFC Ltd., the bank faced challenges like managing high-cost borrowings, meeting regulatory requirements, and improving deposit growth. However, with strong asset quality, a well-balanced loan book, and a focus on efficiency, HDFC Bank is set for long-term success.
In this blog, I break down HDFC Bank’s financial report by Motilal Oswal, explaining its current position, future strategy, and investment potential.
1. Loan Growth: Slow But Steady
Instead of chasing rapid expansion, HDFC Bank is now focusing on quality lending.Loan growth was 3% YoY in Q3FY25, which is slower than before. The Commercial and Rural Banking (CRB) segment grew 11% YoY, while retail loans (home, car, personal loans) grew 10% YoY.Agriculture loans saw a strong 15.7% YoY growth, showing HDFC Bank’s focus on financial inclusion.
Future Outlook
Loan growth is expected to pick up in FY26 (10%) and FY27 (13%), in line with the industry. The bank is shifting to higher-yielding loans like retail and CRB to earn more interest income.
2. Deposit Strategy: Building a Strong Base
HDFC Bank is working on increasing deposits to reduce dependence on borrowings.Deposits are expected to grow at 15% CAGR over FY25-27, helping the bank replace costly borrowings. The CASA ratio (Current & Savings Account deposits) dropped to 34% in Q3FY25, but it is expected to improve as interest rates stabilize.
✔ More deposits mean the bank has cheaper
funds to lend, boosting profits.
3. Managing High-Cost Borrowings
After merging with HDFC Ltd., the bank inherited expensive loans (borrowings at high interest rates). It reduced borrowings by 23% YoY, replacing them with lower-cost deposits.
✔This will help reduce expenses and improve
profit margins in the long run.
4. Asset Quality: Low Bad Loans, Strong Financials
HDFC Bank has one of the best asset qualities in the industry.Gross NPA (bad loans) = 1.4%, Net NPA = 0.5%, which is very low compared to peers.Credit cost (provisioning for bad loans) is under control at ~50bps.
✔This means the bank is lending carefully and
managing risks well.
5. Profitability: Net Interest Margin (NIM) to Improve
NIM (profitability measure) dropped to 3.4% in FY24, due to higher funding costs. As borrowings reduce and deposit growth improves, NIM will recover from FY27 onwards.
✔Higher NIM = More profit per loan.
Final Verdict: Is HDFC Bank a Good Investment?

Motilal Oswal has given a "BUY" rating with a
target price of INR 2,050 (22% upside).

Strong fundamentals, low bad loans, and growing deposits
